After Arias moved back to Yreka in April of 2008, she and Travis continued to have a kinky, sexual relationship. They would have phone sex, talk almost every night, and when they saw each other, they'd have oral, anal, and vaginal sex. She claimed that Travis was the one who continued to want all kinds of sex from her. This was difficult to believe as Arias seemed to always be the one initiating their encounters. Arias had a tendency to pathologically lie throughout the entire case, so because it was proven she had lied from the very beginning about numerous things, it was difficult to believe anything that she said, even under oath on the witness stand.
Arias ended up recording a very long phone conversation on May 10, 2008, which she claimed that Travis wanted for his enjoyment. Yet there was no evidence to support that, just evidence that she was recording the conversation (possibly as blackmail), without his knowledge. In this phone call we heard Travis specifically stating that he had never masturbated before he met her, that Arias was the one who introduced him to KY personal lubricant, and also, to his detriment, admit that he had a sexual fantasy about "tying her to a tree and putting it in her ass." Arias replied with, "oh my gosh. That's so debasing. I love it!" He also admitted, after one of her fake orgasms, that "she sounded like a 12 year old having her first orgasm." Arias ran with this statement and claimed Travis was a pedophile who secretly liked little boys and girls. She also lied and said that she had caught him on January 21, 2008 masturbating to an image of a little boy. After she caught him, she stated that she left the house, drove home and threw up, and then went to Starbucks, got two frappucinos, and took them back to Travis. They then proceeded to have sex. That was extremely hard to believe considering they had sex immediately after she caught him engaged in masturbating to an image of a little boy. Yet she used this date as an example of Travis being a secret pedophile.
Arias was known to have kept journals as well. These journals were admitted as evidence at trial, and she had a journal entry dated January 24, 2008 stating, "nothing noteworthy to report." So that was one piece of evidence that she was truly lying about the "pedophilloic" incident. She also claimed that Travis would get physically violent with her. On one occasion, she stated that they were sitting in his car in late March 2008, and she informed him she was moving back to Yreka. He allegedly got so angry that he hit her on the side of the neck/jaw area. Her journals indicate otherwise. They indicate that they sat in the car and after she told him she was moving, he leaned over and gave her 3 soft, tender kisses. She also referenced an incident where Travis got so angry he body slammed her, and choked her until she passed out. Yet, she continued to travel with him and sleep with him. On one occasion she discussed an incident where she, Travis, and his friends, Daniel and Desiree Freeman (brother and sister), were going on a road trip to Sedona & the Grand Canyon. Arias had come downstairs and found that Dan had unpacked her whole backpack and had all its contents laid out on the table because her pack was too heavy. She immediately ran upstairs without saying anything, and according to her, Travis allegedly followed her upstairs where they fought. He apparently got very angry with her and yelled at her. I can't remember if she claimed he got physical with her on that incident as well. They all packed the car and began their road trip. She referenced that at one point she got out to take photos of the Grand Canyon and Travis, as a joke, rolled the car forward so she couldn't get back in.
Arias referenced another violent incident that allegedly occurred in August of 2007, which was pretty obviously made up. She stated that he had gotten angry with her downstairs in his home. He had left her downstairs sitting on the washing machine and she started hearing a banging noise upstairs. She claimed she was curious to what the noise was, so she went upstairs and witnessed him banging his head against "the door frame" to the linen closet. She called out his name, and he allegedly spun around, "got this mean look on his face," grabbed her wrist, hugged her tightly, and then apologized. She claimed she was "stiff with fear" at that moment, even though he hadn't ever hit her before. She was very specific that it wasn't the actual door to the linen closet, it was the door frame. Pathological liars tend to add very specific details into their lies to try and make it sound more believable. Sometimes they even add a little truth into the story as well. Arias was very specific about mundane details in her stories. When she did that, very frequently, even on the witness stand, it was easy to tell she was lying. When she told that story on the witness stand, the Prosecution was quick to highlight on that incident, that it was Travis who left the situation and went upstairs. It was Arias who followed him, where she could have simply stayed downstairs and stayed away from a potentially violent incident.
There was another occurrence where Arias claimed that Travis had thrown her down around January of 2008. She claimed that Travis had thrown her down so hard, knocked her out, and kicked her left hand when she was down, causing her to break her left ring finger, which is now allegedly permanently bent. She claimed that Travis was apologetic afterwards and even made her a homemade splint. However, she also claimed that she broke her left ring finger on a margarita glass at work, which is what she apparently told Ryan Burns. Afterwards, on the witness stand, she claimed she jammed her left ring finger on a metal ledge at work while making margaritas. There were so many stories about how she injured her left ring finger that no one will really know what happened to it; but it was highly suspected that she injured it during the killing of Travis.
Arias also referenced a trip she and Travis took to Ehrenberg, AZ. It was during this trip that she claimed they fulfilled a fantasy of his of having sex on the hood of a car on a freeway off-ramp, and just driving away afterwards. Even though they didn't have sex on the car, they did have sex that weekend. She claimed that it "wasn't a romantic weekend," as Travis literally came, and threw candy at her afterwards and drove away without saying anything. However during her 48 Hours TV interview, she referenced what a great time they had in Ehrenberg, and how Travis had even stopped for a homeless woman, asked if she was hungry, drove to Wendy's, got the triple decker and a biggie drink and went back to give it to her. After reminiscing about how generous Travis always was, ahe also referenced a time when Travis had surprised her with her favorite, Cinnabon, a gift card and a recipe for Cinnabon that was left on the hood of her car after returning home one night.
Travis was set to go to Cancun on a PPL prepaid vacation in early June of 2008. The vacation allowed for two people on the ticket. He initially asked Marie (Mimi) Hall to accompany him, whom he had dated recently. She called it off, stating she only wanted to be friends. It was with Mimi that Arias was accused of following her and Travis on a date. Apparently Mimi was set to go with him to Cancun until about 2 weeks before the trip. She then declined, telling him he should take someone else. Travis never asked Arias to go to Cancun with him. According to Arias, Travis was scheduled to visit her in Yreka after the Cancun trip. They had been doing things together from a book called, "1000 Places To See Before You Die." So they planned on seeing Shakespeare, and driving up the Oregon coastline. However, we can safely assume that Arias was jealous that Travis didn't ask her to accompany him. That was one of many motives for her ultimately killing Travis. She stated in her interrogation video with Detective Flores on July 15, 2008, that she was "a little envious" of him going to Cancun, "but that wasn't the REASON" (that she killed him), after being asked about Travis's trip to Cancun and how she felt about it.
In late May of 2008, Travis and Arias got into their last argument over text message. He apparently found out something about Arias, no one knows what, and he called her a sociopath, that she only cried for herself, and claimed she was "the worst thing that had ever happened to me." I believe that he either found out about the recorded phone call, or she threatened him in some way. Either way, he had discovered something about her that he felt betrayed by, and lashed out at her over text message. I believe that it was after this conversation that she decided she would kill him. Travis had already made it very clear to Arias that he didn't want to marry her, and ultimately she kept coming back to him for sex. Evidence showed that he tried to rid himself of her; this last May 2008 conversation proved that. Arias also admitted that when she was moving away from Mesa in April of 2008, he flipped her the double bird as she drove away
