History of Jodi Arias

Jodi Arias was convicted of brutally murdering her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander on June 4, 2008 in his home in Mesa, Arizona. Mr. Alexander suffered a gunshot wound to the face, 27+ stab wounds, and near decapitation from ear to ear. Arias was sentenced to life in Perryville prison without the possibility of parole on April 13, 2015.

Travis Victor Alexander was born on July 28, 1977 in Riverside, California. He was a dedicated Mormon, and even a temple-worthy Mormon at times, belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He worked as a salesman for a company called PrePaid Legal (PPL), currently Legal Shield, and was a motivational speaker. He had begun writing a book detailing his abusive childhood with his 7 additional siblings. His parents were drug addicts and possibly alcoholics, who severely neglected him and his siblings. They were all taken in by their paternal grandmother, Norma Jean Sarvey (1932-2012) and introduced to the church.  His book was to meant to inspire and motivate from his personal experience.

Jodi Ann Arias was born on July 9, 1980 in Salinas, California, and primarily resided in Yreka, California where her parents and grandparents lived. She was a waitress, had dropped out of high school in 11th grade, and mostly lived with her grandparents while in Yreka, stating that there was little room at her parents house, and more at her grandparents. She and Travis met at a PPL Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada in September of 2006. This was after she claimed someone had given her PPL materials and a DVD. She watched the DVD before throwing it away, and decided to try it out and enrolled as a salesperson. There are apparently 2 PPL conferences held annually; one in Las Vegas and another in Oklahoma City. The way Arias explained it, Travis spotted her from across the floor near the Rainforest Cafe, and be-lined towards her. He immediately stuck out his hand and said, "hi, I'm Travis." Arias was a platinum blonde at that time, even though her natural hair color is brown. They continued to spend the next few days together; Travis even inviting her to sit with him at the Executive Ball. She didn't have a proper dress at the time, so she borrowed one from Travis's good friend, Sky Hughes. They continued to talk into the early morning hours almost every night of the convention. It was then that Arias disclosed to Travis she had a boyfriend, Darryl Brewer, whom she'd been dating and living with for the past 4 1/2 years. One night, Arias claimed Travis tried to kiss her, but instead licked his lips while staring at hers, and said, "I wish you didn't have a boyfriend."
Arias left Las Vegas and immediately 4 days later broke up with her boyfriend, Darryl. She claimed they had been sleeping in separate bedrooms anyway for months, and claimed their relationship wasn't going anywhere because she wanted marriage and kids and he didn't. He already had a son, Jack, who lived with them part-time, and had been open and honest about not wanting another marriage. She claimed to have talked to Travis every day after the convention, and then finally rendezvoused with him at his close friends, Sky and Chris Hughes' house, which was in between her home and Travis's about 9 days after the convention. It was that evening that she claimed Travis wanted oral sex and she willingly gave it, despite him following the Law of Chastity, which bans all sexual activity in Mormonism. During Arias's direct examination, she claimed it was uncomfortable because it was simply, "too soon." However, during Arias's cross-examination, she contradicted herself by saying, "(their sexual activity) was always mutual." She also added that Travis "never raped" her, and admitted she liked all sexual activity she and he engaged in.
By November of 2006 (only 2 months after meeting), Arias was baptized into the Mormon church by Travis himself in a Southern California Mormon church. The two began officially dating in February of 2007. It was a long-distance relationship when they dated, as she still resided in Yreka, and him in Mesa. Only 5 short months later, they officially broke up in late July of 2007. Arias claimed that Travis had been cheating on her with other women. She claimed that all trust had been lost between them, and a little while later, she claimed Travis suggested trading email, Facebook and MySpace passwords to try and reestablish trust between them. She ended up moving to Mesa, Arizona after they had already broken up, claiming that Travis was the one who encouraged her to still move there despite not officially dating each other anymore. It was when she lived in Mesa that her bizarre stalking behavior really began. She had been accused of slashing his tires on 2 separate occasions, following Travis on dates, sending a threatening "John Doe" email to his new girlfriend, Lisa Andrews, breaking in through Travis's doggy door and sleeping on his couch, stealing a diamond ring of his, and even breaking into his house and sleeping under his Christmas tree.

Throughout the first few days of Arias's testimony, she highlighted her relationships with previous boyfriends. The first was Bobby Juarez, whom she had met at a state carnival. She later saw him at a football game and she reintroduced herself. Late in her Junior year of high school, she was caught outside of school by her father apparently studying for a history test. He grounded her for the next 3 months until graduation. Arias didn't like the thought of being grounded for 3 months, so she moved out into Bobby's grandparents house (whom he called his parents) with him, and at that time officially dropped out of high school. She described the living conditions as horrible; his "parents" smoked in the house, it was cluttered and packed full of boxes and random things. She and Bobby lived in the basement where she claimed it was neater. Since Bobby didn't have a car or job at the time she lived with him, she claimed she drove him everywhere, bought groceries and clothes for him. One day they went to the library where they both got on the computers and checked email. She said she had become suspicious of him and another woman whom he had claimed to have feelings for previously. After she dropped him off at a friends house after the library, she went back to the library and hit the backspace button on his computer. It pulled up his hotmail account where she found email "love" letters between Bobby and this other woman. She printed out the emails, went back to his house and packed her things. She then drove to Bobby's friends house and handed him the letters without speaking. She also called into work saying she wouldn't be there that day for her shift. Somehow Bobby and she reconciled and she moved her things back into his house. They apparently broke up a few more times after that, and after the last time, she admitted to bringing groceries to his house and leaving them on the doorstep for him. One day at work, a man who came in frequently with a dog-eared Bible, claimed that the end of the world was to occur very soon on September 29th. She called Bobby to tell him about the end of the world, and he immediately hung up on her when he discovered who it was. She called him back the next day and he hung up on her again. She then claimed that he called her back a couple days later and they talked at length, and apparently became friends. Arias claimed there was a domestic violence incident between her and Bobby while they were dating. She alleges that they got into an argument, and Bobby twisted her arm. She claimed that she got to the phone and dialed 911, but Bobby grabbed the phone and hung up, all while shouting, "shut up, they're going to call back." She alleged someone did call back and Bobby explained that his girlfriend was trying to program 911 into the phone and accidentally called it. She claimed that specific incident was why she never called 911 again, despite all the "physical arguments" that she and Travis got into. What Arias failed to realize was if 911 is called on a domestic violence incident, they always ask to talk to the other party to see if they're alright, or they will send police out to the house to check on the welfare of everybody. Arias obviously fabricated this incident to explain why she never called 911 on any of the physical altercations that she and Travis allegedly had.
Arias then met Matt McCartney through Bobby. She claimed that she liked how he treated women in general, and they began to date. Their living situation wasn't much better, as she claimed they lived in a tent for a while. According to Arias, after a while of dating, one day at work two girls came in and told her that Matt was cheating on her with a girl named Bianca. Bianca apparently lived an hour and a half away. While Matt was away, she left her work that day and immediately drove the distance to where Bianca lived to confront her. Arias claimed that she ran into a mutual friend, Steve, at Bianca's dorm building. Steve was described by her as "gay," and "feminine." After Arias inquired about Bianca, Steve told her Bianca's room number, but gave her the wrong number. Arias found it herself by transposing the last two numbers Steve gave her. She overheard Steve yelling in a "very feminine" voice, apparently letting Bianca know she was there. Arias claimed to have a civil conversation with Bianca, and it was confirmed that Matt was seeing Bianca. Arias then drove back home and ended it with Matt, yet they remained friends. She described Matt as an "ally" and "someone who would never betray her" in later TV interviews.
Arias went on to meet Darryl Brewer at the Ventana Inn and Spa, where he was the catering manager at the time. He downgraded his position and began dating Arias for the next 4 1/2 years. Darryl is quite a bit older than Arias, and they ended up purchasing a home together. She eventually ended it with Darryl 4 days after she met Travis. The home went into foreclosure when they both couldn't make the mortgage payments any longer. By that time, Arias had already shown quite an interest in Travis, despite only knowing him for a few days.

Arias ultimately claimed that Travis was cheating on her, which is why they broke up. Yet she continued to stalk him, move only 10-15 minutes away from him after they broke up, and after she eventually moved back to Yreka in April of 2008, she began the premeditation of Travis's murder.

Arias's Premeditation

After Travis and Arias's late May 2008 text argument, Arias began intricate preparations to travel to Mesa, AZ to murder him. She began on May 28, 2008 by staging a burglary at her grandparents house. When the police arrived to the house, they discovered these "burglars" only wanted a .25 caliber handgun. They left all other rifles, shotguns, money, and electronics in the home. Arias claimed to return to the house around 1:00pm, and was asked to look around her room to see if anything was missing. She initially told them her laptop went missing, but later claimed that she was glad she had it with her because she normally keeps it in her clothes hamper. So even if she did have it in her hamper, the "burglars" didn't take it. She ultimately claimed the only thing missing from her room was a $10 and $20 bill, totaling $30. They apparently left the money that was in the closet with all the guns in it, and only took this .25 caliber handgun that Arias described a...

Arias and Alexander

After Arias moved back to Yreka in April of 2008, she and Travis continued to have a kinky, sexual relationship. They would have phone sex, talk almost every night, and when they saw each other, they'd have oral, anal, and vaginal sex. She claimed that Travis was the one who continued to want all kinds of sex from her. This was difficult to believe as Arias seemed to always be the one initiating their encounters. Arias had a tendency to pathologically lie throughout the entire case, so because it was proven she had lied from the very beginning about numerous things, it was difficult to believe anything that she said, even under oath on the witness stand. Arias ended up recording a very long phone conversation on May 10, 2008, which she claimed that Travis wanted for his enjoyment. Yet there was no evidence to support that, just evidence that she was recording the conversation (possibly as blackmail), without his knowledge. In this phone call we heard Travis specifically stating th...
